And the character sketches that follow give us Sophie’s point-of-view so clearly, while also showing us that things might not be exactly as she thinks. ![]() Everyone knows you are the one who will fail first, and worst, if the three of you set out to seek your fortunes.” It’s such a perfect set up for the story that will follow, with the fairy tale echoes, and also the parts that push back against fairy tales. “In the land of Ingary where such things as seven-league boots and cloaks of invisibility really exist, it is quite a misfortune to be born the eldest of the three. The opening of this book is really delightful. It’s also one of my favorite books by DWJ, and yet one that I have never really reviewed until now. It has two sequels, Castle in the Air, and House of Many Ways. Howl’s Moving Castle is one of Diana Wynne Jones’s best known and most popular books.
